The look and feel of your skin can change dramatically with age, as UV rays, poor nutrition, and a decline in hormones can all lead to skin aging. Fortunately, there are nutrients that can help support healthy skin. OptiMSM has been recognized as one of these beneficial nutrients, but it hasn’t been until recently that a pilot study examined the parameters around its unique ability to improve skin texture and appearance.
A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial published in the Natural Medicine Journal recruited 20 women to take 3 grams of MSM per day or a placebo for 16 weeks. Researchers found that MSM helped regulate key genes involved with healthy and younger-looking skin. MSM also reduced the appearance of crow’s feet and improved skin firmness.
Women taking OptiMSM have more favorable self-assessment scores when compared to those taking the placebo.
The study concluded, “MSM taken orally may be beneficial for skin health and reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. It works by altering gene expression of key genes that affect moisturization and barrier function, extracellular matrix production, and inflammation control.” By regulating specific genes involved with skin health, supplementing with MSM can help support the structural integrity of the skin.
While OptiMSM is more widely known for having an integral part in joint health, this research indicates it is also involved in supporting healthy skin.
